Has World Missions become all about worker training?
I hear this question pop up every so often, and honestly, I get why people ask it. When we talk about seminaries and leadership training around the world, it’s easy to think that the real “boots on the ground” outreach has faded away. But here’s the thing—God is still using WELS in amazing ways. Outreach hasn’t just survived; it’s grown and expanded beyond anything folks in the 1950s and 1960s could have imagined.
Back then, WELS World Missions took its first steps in Japan and Rhodesia (now Zambia and Malawi). The focus was simple: Share Christ’s love, plant seeds, and nurture new believers. It wasn’t only about training leaders or setting up institutions. Missionaries were out there evangelizing, baptizing, and building relationships. Those early efforts set the stage for what would become a global network of gospel work.
Fast-forward to today, and WELS is working and partnering in more than 60 countries. Let that sink in—60! It’s incredible to think how God has multiplied our reach: blessing those first steps and growing them into a worldwide movement. The diversity and scope of that mission work is something worth celebrating.
With worker training and outreach working side by side, our mission is more balanced and vibrant than ever.
And outreach is still very much alive. Senegal, Australia, and the United Kingdom are just a few examples. There, mission teams are deployed (or soon will be) to make real connections, share Jesus with people who might never have heard the gospel before, and start new congregations. Sometimes world missionaries are in places where the name of Christ is barely known. They get to see the gospel take root right before their eyes. It’s humbling and exciting all at once.
Of course, worker training is a big part of what World Missions does too. In places like Hong Kong, Germany, and Zambia, World Missions supports seminary programs and helps equip local leaders. They get the education, mentorship, and hands-on experience needed to guide their communities in faith. But here’s what I love: Once a seed is planted, we don’t just pack up and leave. We stick around for the long haul, walking alongside our partners until they’re ready to lead and add their own culture, wisdom, and insight to our shared mission. That’s how the mission stays strong and keeps growing—it becomes theirs as much as ours.
These partnerships are a huge blessing. Some relationships have lasted for decades, crossing continents and cultures. Whether it’s supporting seminaries, local churches, or mission teams, World Missions is committed to both outreach and training. These connections help us learn from one another, grow together, and make a lasting impact.
So to answer the question—no, outreach hasn’t disappeared. In fact, with worker training and outreach working side by side, our mission is more balanced and vibrant than ever. Outreach opens doors and hearts; training makes sure those doors stay open for the next generation. As partners grow, they bring their own flavor to the global family of faith, making the Lord’s work richer and more beautiful.
God is using WELS to reach new communities, prepare workers, and build lasting friendships. Let’s celebrate what’s happening and pray for even more, because honestly, wow, look at everything the Lord has done!
