WELS Europe Team, part of WELS World Missions, is working with the Igreja Luterana de Portugal (ILP), WELS’ sister synod in Portugal, to reach the world’s largest Portuguese-speaking country—Brazil. In April, Denício Godoy was ordained and commissioned as an ILP missionary to Brazil where he plans to plant house churches in Dom Cavati (his Brazilian hometown) and Governador Valadares (a large city where he and his family just moved). He also will expand the ILP’s online presence in Brazil. Trained at a seminary in Brazil, Godoy discovered the Lutheran Church of Portugal when searching for a confessional Lutheran voice in his native language of Portuguese. He joined in fellowship with WELS and the ILP through colloquy. Pictured are Artur Villares, ILP president, presenting an alb to Godoy. Kenneth Cherney Jr., WELS Europe Team representative to the ILP, is looking on.
In March, 18 men graduated from the Lutheran seminary in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India, the worker-training ministry of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Ministries, WELS’ sister church in India. These men, all of whom already are serving congregations, studied God’s Word and trained for ministry work for seven years. A WELS friendly counselor supports and assists with the pre-seminary and seminary training.
WELS Military Services, a part of WELS Special Ministries, held its annual workshop for military contact pastors in April at Risen Savior, Pooler, Ga., near Army Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Part of the workshop included visiting Fort Stewart, which also sponsored a meeting between attendees and more than a dozen of the post’s military chaplains. WELS has 125 congregations and their pastors near military installations, providing care to men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces and their families.
