Movies, moms, and ministry

As part of a rebranding and restart in 2022, we at Crosspoint, Georgetown, Texas, developed a portion of our 8.5-acre campus into the “Crosspoint Backyard.” We wanted to make it a place where the community felt comfortable just sitting, playing, and getting to know each other. The community really needed that in-person connection after COVID.

Crosspoint’s outdoor movie nights offer a chance to connect with the community.

Our plan to start engaging the community was to hold monthly outdoor movie nights. In summer 2023, with a large screen strung between poles, we began inviting the community to “The Backyard” for games, food trucks, popcorn, and a feature film.

Many moms, dads, and kids from the community came, but a special group of moms was in a season of need and transition. These moms were being served by a maternity home within walking distance of Crosspoint. We decided to invite them to join us for an evening out, complete with a $5 food truck voucher.

And they came—moms with their strollers, babies, and toddlers.

As the months progressed, one mom asked, “Why are we going to [the big nondenominational church in town] on Sundays when they do little for us, but Crosspoint keeps inviting us.”

So she started coming to Crosspoint on Sundays with a few of her housemates. And they kept coming. Now the church van only had one stop: Crosspoint.

Today, five to eight moms and their children attend Crosspoint. At first, they stayed to themselves, but slowly they are becoming more comfortable coming into the worship space, bringing food to our Second Sunday lunch, and making Crosspoint their personal church. In addition, twice a month I meet them for Bible study at the maternity home. I’ve had many meaningful spiritual conversations, encouraging these women as they grow in their connection to Jesus.

Time at the maternity home for these women can be short, but the opportunity to share the gospel has had an eternal impact. Over the last few years, four children and two moms have been welcomed into God’s family through Baptism. What a win for God’s kingdom! And it all started with an invitation, a $5 voucher, and a movie night.

Two moms and their children continue to make Crosspoint their church after leaving the maternity home. One is Devonia Knowles, who reflects on her new church:

My connection to Crosspoint started when [we were] invited for the Easter celebration and movie nights. Pastor Mike and his wife led me to engage myself and encourage other mothers from [the maternity home] to join the church family God has put together.

I’ve been searching a long time to find a church home, and God led my son and me to Crosspoint. These people are so sweet, loving, kind, and will help you in any way they can or just be an ear if you need someone to talk to. The more I was able to visit with these people, the safer and more connected to God I felt. . . .

It has been an honor to become a member of Crosspoint, and my son and I will continue to stay and grow with Crosspoint. May God bless Crosspoint and the family he has put together to form an excellent community!
