Death is nothing to be afraid of because Jesus has a room ready for you in heaven.
I once knew a Christian woman who was afraid of death. She believed in Jesus. She came to church every Sunday. She loved hearing God’s Word. But she was deathly afraid of death.
Until one Sunday at church when we heard these words from Jesus: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:1-3).
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms” (John 14:1,2).
As I preached on those words, I remember glancing at her face. Know what I saw? A huge smile. As she heard Jesus’ words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. . . . My Father’s house has many rooms,” she couldn’t stop smiling.
In fact, she was still smiling when she came up to me after the service and declared, “Pastor, I’m not scared anymore. I’m not scared of death anymore. I have a little room waiting for me in heaven. Jesus has a little room for me in heaven. My little room. My little room!” I’ve never seen someone so happy. I hope the message of Easter gives you that same joy, even in the face of death.
For many of us, there’s no place more like home than the room we had in our parents’ house. To this day, that little room—maybe our first bedroom—tugs at our hearts. That’s home!
That’s what Jesus has prepared for you in heaven. Home! Your little room. Jesus died to forgive your sins. Jesus rose to win eternal life. He’s made you a child of God the Father by faith. And there, in your Father’s house, he’s prepared a room for you. All that’s left is for Jesus to come and take you home.
That isn’t scary, is it? “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Believe Jesus’ words! “My Father’s house has many rooms.” One of them is for you. One of them is for me. My little room.
