Illustrating God’s powerful Word through art at Taste of Missions

“To put my art out there was a huge blessing,” says Vienne Lang, a junior at Luther Preparatory School, Watertown, Wis., about her experience entering and winning the Taste of Missions high school poster contest. “Knowing that they saw [my piece] and were able to feel the same emotions that I felt when making it—it felt pretty special to me.”

This is the first year WELS Missions has held a high school poster contest for its Taste of Missions event. Thirty-six students, including Vienne, participated in this contest, learning about WELS Home, World, and Joint Missions as they created their pieces.

Vienne entered the contest after receiving encouragement from her friend and high school art teacher. Her piece is inspired by the countless missionaries serving across the globe. “That really made me think about Christians just going out into the world to different countries to spread the Word of God,” she says. “A big influence was just thinking of God’s Word and how powerful it is and how it just brings so much joy and hope to people and how there’s nothing else like that in the world.”

Vienne’s artwork, along with the other posters, was displayed at the Taste of Missions event held June 15 at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, Wis. Attendees voted for a fan favorite during the event. Elizabeth Kuehner’s piece received the most votes.

More than 470 people attended Taste of Missions this year, with an additional 104 registering to attend virtually. The highlight of the event was the commissioning service, where nine new home and world missionaries were sent into their fields of service.

Through providing opportunities to learn more about WELS Missions from missionaries and see the power of God’s Word through Vienne’s and other students’ artwork, the event illustrated how God works in different ways to share the good news.
