Meet the editorial staff: Stephen Geiger

Ever ask yourself, “Who are these people who write for Forward in Christ?” Through this series, you can find out.

Stephen Geiger brings years of experience as a tutor, pastor, scholar, and professor to his role as Forward in Christ’s new contributing editor for the Q&A column.

Stephen Geiger and his wife and family
Geiger and his wife, Anna, have six children. Back row, left to right: Isaiah, Josiah, Micah, Eliana, Mariah. Front row: Elisha.

The son of a pastor, Geiger was born in South Dakota before his family moved a couple of years later to California, where he spent the rest of his childhood.

After graduating from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, Wis., Geiger served for two years as a tutor at Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minn. He then spent eight years serving congregations in South Dakota. In 2005, he joined the faculty of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, where his teaching focuses primarily on the New Testament. He also serves as the seminary’s vice president and financial aid officer and regularly leads tours to the Holy Land and Journeys of Paul sites. His book How the Bible Came to Be: Exploring Its Origins, Presentation, and Translations is scheduled for release by Northwestern Publishing House later this year.

As he begins writing for the Q&A column, Geiger says he is grateful for this unique opportunity to share the gospel with WELS members and those who may not even be Christian yet. “I pray that the truths of God’s Word will bring clarity, peace, and joy to many,” he says.

Geiger acknowledges that all Christians have questions. Too often, however, those questions remain unspoken out of embarrassment or fear. “Let the questions out,” he says. “Then pray that any answer given will be faithful to everything God has revealed and comfortable saying nothing more than what God has revealed.”

He hopes the Q&A column continues to help readers address their real questions honestly and faithfully. “Forward in Christ is not a place to pretend,” he says. “My prayer is that the Q&A discussions, along with every other part of the magazine, will help each of us expose our sinful flesh, rejoice in God’s grace, and navigate difficult issues in our lives and in the world.”
