Christmas is about you

Why did Jesus come to earth, born that night in Bethlehem? It was all for you.

Another Christmas for Kids Saturday was wrapping up. The children had learned about the birth of Jesus. They heard how the Lord chose Mary to give birth to their Savior. They learned about the angels telling the shepherds the wonderful news and how the shepherds ran into Bethlehem to find the baby Jesus. The children sang songs, created crafts, and even made a snack that all reinforced what they had learned in their lesson.

Now it was time for the closing devotion. I wanted to see what the children had learned. So I asked the question, “Who is Christmas all about?” Three-year-old Alex didn’t miss a beat. With a big smile on his face, he patted his chest and answered, “Me!”

There were some smiles and even a few chuckles. Most people were anticipating the answer “Jesus.” And from our perspective, Christmas is about Jesus.

However, from God’s perspective, Alex was correct. About seven hundred years before Jesus was born, the Lord inspired Isaiah to prophesy, “To us a child is born, to us a son is given. . . . He will be called . . . Mighty God . . . Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6, emphasis added).

“Today in the town of David, a Savior was born for you” (Luke 2:11 Evangelical Heritage Version).

The angel echoed Alex’s answer with this announcement to the shepherds, “I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all people: Today in the town of David, a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10,11 Evangelical Heritage Version, emphasis added).

I’m confident that Jesus is pleased when we say that Christmas is about him in contrast to all the worldly trappings that come along with this time of year.

But you can be confident that when you answer like Alex, “Christmas is about me,” Jesus is pleased as well. That’s why Jesus was born—for you. That’s why Jesus lived under God’s law—for you.

That’s why Jesus suffered and died to pay for sin and win forgiveness—for you. That’s why Jesus rose from the dead to give eternal life through faith in him—for you.

From your Savior’s perspective, Christmas is about you.
