Bacon-wrapped lies

Bacon makes everything better. For some, that’s a self-evident truth.

I am not much of a salad eater, but salad with bacon bits is palatable. Jalapeños give me indigestion, but I will digest them if they are wrapped in bacon.

I know not everybody shares my affinity for everything bacon. I understand some may disagree with me . . . but I think they are wrong.

I’ll eat just about anything if it is wrapped in bacon.

And so will our world. One of the biggest traps of the devil is that he wraps his lies in bacon. He wraps his lies in good things.

Open Bible with the words "Every day with Galatians"
Bible reading for February 22:
"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other" (Galatians 5:13-15).
Luther's commentary on the reading:
"The whole law is completely summarized in this one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’. . . . Serving another person through love seems . . . to mean performing unimportant works such as the following: teaching the erring; comforting the afflicted; encouraging the weak; helping the neighbor in whatever way one can; bearing with his rude manners and impoliteness; putting up with annoyances, labors, and the ingratitude and contempt of men in both the church and state; obeying magistrates; treating one’s parents with respect; being patient in the home with a cranky [spouse] and an unmanageable family, and the like. But believe me, these works are so outstanding and brilliant that the whole world cannot comprehend their usefulness and worth" (Luther's Works, Volume 27).

It is probably the best known story from the life of David. A young, ill-armed, over-matched shepherd boy faces a grizzled, well-armed, braggadocious warrior giant. David vs Goliath. Say that and much of the world knows what you’re talking about. And yet, I wonder . . .

When you live two miles beyond the end of the earth in Houghton, Michigan, you expect to pay more to rent a car. So it was a pleasant surprise when I reserved a car online, and the daily rate was $42.00. For five days that . . .
