Moldenhauer and students for enews

No regrets

Dr. Martin Moldenhauer served at the grade school, high school, and college level during his time as a WELS teacher. Moldenhauer retired at the end of this past school year and reflects here on his years in the classroom—and outside it.

Service history
1973-1975 Instructor of English, Northwestern Preparatory School, Watertown, Wis.
1975-1977 Principal and 7th and 8th grade teacher, St. Paul’s, Columbus, Ohio
1977-1983 English teacher and coach, Lakeside Lutheran High School, Lake Mills, Wis.
1983-1995 Professor of English, Northwestern Preparatory School, Watertown, Wis.
1995-1998 Professor of English, Luther Preparatory School, Watertown, Wis.
1998-2020 Professor of English, Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee, Wis.

On becoming a teacher
Both my mother and my father were Lutheran school teachers, and I never considered anything else for my life’s work.

Favorite memory
I never had a day of drudgery or regret, and teaching was always “fun” for me. The joy of seeing students “get it” was reward enough for me. Among my best memories would be the happy smiles of students that I have taken to Europe for study abroad classes (pictured above with one such group at the British National Archives of Dove Cottage in England). It was so special to see their excitement as we explored new countries together. I have been fortunate to see many of my former students become pastors and teachers, and that too gives great joy and satisfaction.

Final thoughts
It was my privilege to help young adults to find their talents and improve them. Serving in a Christian setting of higher education has allowed me to share my faith and nurture the souls and minds of thousands of students. It has been an honor to serve and teach in many settings, and I thank God for the privilege. To all of my former students—keep the faith, use your God-given talents, and serve the Lord with gladness.
